I have been dealing in antique Oriental Rugs for over 50 years, and not many rugs make my heart go pitter-patter, but this one does. It had all of the charms of the old school when small village weavers made rugs not for export but for their own use. They would only sell one of their own when they really needed money for some important reason. This is one of those pieces where an accomplished weaver used the best of wool and hand-blended vegetable dyes to create a rug that told a story. The animals in this piece reflected existing domestic pets and livestock. This piece can be called a collector's item. It came from a grand old estate that was pet-free, smoke-free, and very clean. Some old minor repairs have been done. There is an old repair at the top right-hand corner, as shown in the last two photos; it mostly stands out at the back. It had some old-fashioned darning by a skilled hand. stability problems for daily use. If it didn't have this repair, which is not much of a distraction, I could ask eight times as much.
